Little Miss Sunshine (2006)

Sheryl: You know, like it or not, we're still your family, for better or worse...
Dwayne: No, you're *not* my family! I don't wanna *be* your family! I hate you fucking people! Divorce? Bankrupt? Suicide? You're fucking losers, you're losers! No, please just leave me here, Mom. Please, please, please. Please... just leave me here.

Rozvod? Bankrot? Samovražda? Ste lúzri! Nie, proste ma nechajte tu, mama! Prosím, prosím... Prosím, nechajte ma tu.
Rewatching Little Miss Sunshine felt like a welcome return. What can be more endearing than a crazy family travelling over a good part of the continent so that their little girl can compete in a child beauty pageant. I love parodies of beauty pageants (doesn't every pageant feel like a parody as it is?...). Even though that the Hollywood concept of disfunctional just-a-little-bit-off families is far from a new one, this comedy can still give you some cheerful moments.
We see parents: father, who's a deadringer for Bruce Willis, and a mother, played by Toni Collette from United States of Tara (recommedations!), who are reluctant but despite of the trouble they decide to drive with their little daughter Olive to California for a beauty pageant. Mother's brother Frank has just days ago tried to commit suicide so they obviously can't travel without him and leave him alone. Their teenage son, Dwayne, is also too young to be left at home on his own and he agrees to go and support his little sister even though he's going through a very turbulent teenage phase. Grandpa likes training little Olive for the competition, mentoring teenage Dwayne and snorting cocaine. So even though this is a film about a family it doesn't mean that it's for the whole family. Don't watch it with kids. You see, if you did, they might start asking you questions like: ''What is this powder grandpa is snorting?'' And there are also lines like this:
Grandpa: Can I give you some advice?
Dwayne: [shakes head "no"]
Grandpa: Well, I'm going to give it to you, anyway. I don't want you making the same mistakes I made when I was young. Dwayne, that's your name, right? Dwayne? Listen to me, this is the voice of experience talking. Are you listening? Fuck a lot of women, Dwayne.
But his heart is in the right place.
This film is one constant conflict. Characters face all kinds of problems from the outside world as well as their own family. In my humble opinion almost every character would benefit from psychological sessions. However, as they are broke they must listen to their youngest and follow her footsteps because even with her childish selfishness (Children are selfish. That's just how it is.) they can't help but protect her innocent excitement, which eventually make them realize what their priorities ar.
Seventh character is the van, which can't also function properly so it fits in alright.
During the trip the characters face their fears and personal tragedies to make peace with their imperfect lives and begin to enjoy themselves at the end. Despite the happy end the film doesn't feel like a bunch of cliches thrown together. The actors were cast brilliantly and every moment feels believable. I grew to love the characters and now I wish to be invited for their family dinners full of family passion and awkwardness.
Grandpa: Every night it's the fucking chicken! Holy God Almighty! Is it possible, just once, we could get something to eat for dinner around here that's not the goddamned fucking chicken?Richard: Whenever you are ready to cook your own food, you're more than welcome to it.Grandpa: Well, at Sunset Manor, ya know...Richard: If you liked Sunset Manor so much, you shouldn't have gotten yourself kicked out of there, right?

Nepozerajte to s deťmi.
Dedo: Každý večer to posraté kura! Richard (otec): Kedykoľvek budeš mať chuť uvariť večeru, my to len privítame.
